CONSUMER COOPERATIVES

Objective:

The main objective of Consumer Cooperatives is to supply quality products at correct measure with reasonable prices to the Consumers.

Organization

In TamilNadu, Consumer Cooperatives is Organized in a Three tier form:-

TamilNadu Consumer Cooperative Federation (TNCCF) – Apex level -1
District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores – District level – 45.
Primary Cooperative Stores – Primary level – 320.

Tamil Nadu Consumer Cooperative Federation (TNCCF)

Started functioning from 30.06.1996.
Apex organization for all Consumer Cooperatives in the State.
The prime objective is to coordinate and facilitate the working of the affiliated societies by making bulk purchase and supplying the required Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).
Also supplies stationeries and printing materials to the District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores, Primary Cooperative Stores and Cooperative Printing Presses.
Coordinates purchase of crackers for Cooperative Institutions.

DISTRICT CONSUMER COOPERATIVE WHOLESALE STORES

District Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores were formed at District level.
At present there are 45 Consumer Cooperative Wholesale Stores functioning in Tamil Nadu.
Procure consumer goods in bulk directly from the producing centers, manufacturers and marketing societies and offer the same to the consumers at a price lesser than the open market price and at reasonable price.
Operate 24 Super Markets, 209 Mini Super Markets, 13 Retail Stores, 51 Self Service Units, 248 Cooperative Medical Shops, 142 Amma Marundagams, 65 Farm Fresh Consumer Outlets, 36 Petrol Bunks, 26 LPG supply units and 80 Kerosene Bunks throughout the State.
Play a vital role in the successful implementation of Public Distribution System by acting as lead societies in supplying the essential commodities to the Fair Price Shops.

The Triplicane Urban Cooperative Society Ltd.(TUCS)

The first Co-operative Society in India after the introduction of the Cooperative Societies Act of 1904
During the second world war 1942, TUCS distributed the necessary food commodities to the people of Madras
Government of Tamil Nadu awarded a shield to the society for distributorship of rice supply to the city of Madras in the year 1959 – 60

PRIMARY COOPERATIVE STORES

Primary cooperative stores are functioning at the tertiary level with the main objective of supplying essential consumer goods to the public at a reasonable price.
They also run Fair Price Shops, Retail Outlets, Petrol and Diesel Outlets, Flour Mill, Masala Grinding Unit and Sikakkai Grinding Unit.
In Tamil Nadu, 320 Primary Cooperative Stores are functioning. The Primary Cooperative Stores run 12 supermarkets, 90 Amma Mini Cooperative Super Markets, 27 Cooperative Medical Shops, 24 Amma Marundhagams, 19 Farm Fresh Consumer Outlets and 5 Petrol and Diesel Retail Outlets.

COOPERATIVE MEDICALS

At present 248 Cooperative Medicals were functioning all over the State. Quality Medicines are sold at reasonable rate , upto 20% discount to the consumers
Upto 31.03.2025 medicines to the value of Rs. 1048.68 crore have been sold.
